PROJECT: PAYSAGES TACTILES

Artists: Delphine Gauly, Juliette Vivier, Marie-Claire Corbel, Laura McCallum, Lamoze

Venue: Memoire de l’Avenir, Paris

Concept: The exhibition Paysages Tactiles [Tactile Landscapes], initially presented in 2021 at Mémoire de l’Avenir, offers a sensorial approach to the notion of landscape in its physical and mental dimensions by creating inclusive spaces of visual and sonic expression for  the visually impaired.

This entirely tactile exhibition, now presented in the Médiathèque Marguerite Duras from May 21st to June 29th 2022, brings together five artists who invite us to experience a variety of works, which are all distinctive proposals of landscapes, through touching, hearing and seeing.

Through printmaking, ceramics, textiles, interactive installations and various objects, the artists seek to summon our senses, imagination and emotions in order to question what constitutes a landscape, beyond the traditional limits of its apprehension.

Delphine Gauly, whose gradually turned her practice towards tactile imageries and Braille script, presents «Rafistoler», an audio work on paper. Through stitching and textures, she invites us to delve into a poetic account of a mountain walk, written by the author Anne Mortal. The artist also presents «Alphabet Paysage», a book allowing the exploration of Braille through tactile imagery and a written work offering comparisons between the structure of Braille letters and landscape elements.

Leaving the mountains behind, the visual artist Juliette Vivier opens up a ceramic exploration of landscapes of folded volumes: landforms, volcanoes, and caves. Through his installations, Lamozé, a composer and visual artist, offers an interactive experience where motion capture and movement allow for composing original genuine soundscapes. Marie-Claire Corbel, with her textile Micro-Gardens and crocheted lace volumes, creates abstract and poetic evocations of sceneries, observed from different perspectives. Laura McCallum proposes with her series «Maya» sculptural landscapes with ambiguous forms and textures that summon and play with our representations and perception of nature.

By proposing an approach to the work through physical interaction and touching, the exhibition aims to offer a common space for experimentation beyond a visual restriction. It incites the visitor to question the common perceptions of landscape, inviting them to part from its more visible aspects in order to perceive it through a wealth of sensory and immaterial features, thus favouring a to renew our prevailing perception of the world through sensory experimentation.
